Anastasiia Sotnikova

plein air and urban sketch artist

About me

I was born in 1996 in a family of artists. I spent my early years in my parents’ workshop, drawing, painting and playing the piano. Started drawing professionally at the age of 15 when enrolling in an art school. Then I studied at an art institute in Moscow. However, I have never graduated. From my late teens I have tried lots of mediums and techniques including oil, linocut, etching, lithography etc. After dropping out of the art institute I did a degree in Arabic and oriental studies.

My real passion is plein air and urban sketching. I always work outside, never using photos. From 16 till 25 I went abroad once or twice a year and had some short plein air time during Russian summers which are short as well. My main destinations back then were Italy, France and Greece.

Two years ago after the Russian invasion of Ukraine I left Moscow and started traveling constantly. I left for both safety reasons and because of moral decision that I made, since my father is originally Ukranian born in Kyiv. I can say that I consider Ukraine to be my second home country. Since February 2022 I have traveled from Uzbekistan to Argentina, spent a significant time in North Africa (Tunisia and Morocco). My favorite transit point is Istanbul, Turkey (as well as my favorite place to depict). During my two year trip I have drawn lots of amazing places including Cairo, Marrakech, Tunis, Tbilisi and Yerevan.

Nowadays I only work with pencils and paper: my nomadic lifestyle doesn’t let me get back to painting on big canvases, so I am creating only chamber artworks. The main idea
of my art is to captivate the moment and life around me, showing the beauty and diversity of the world.

Best wishes, Anastasiia Sotnikova
